What is a uPVC Sliding Sash Window?
A sliding sash window is a traditional type window, historically associated with the Georgian and Victorian eras. These windows are often referred to as "sash windows" or "double-hung windows." The term "double-hung" indicates that there are two movable sashes within the frame.
UPVC Vertical sliding sash windows allow for each sash to move independently of each other. This design allows for flexibility in controlling ventilation, as the top sash can be lowered while the bottom one is raised, and vice versa. Both sashes can also be opened simultaneously for maximum airflow and can also tilt inwards allowing for easy maintenance from inside the property.
The traditional construction of vertical sliding sash windows involves a counterweight mechanism hidden within the window frame. The counterweights are connected to the sashes by cords or chains, allowing for smoother and more balanced operation when opening or closing the windows.

Unique Functionality
Vertical Movement: The distinctive feature of a uPVC sliding sash window is its vertical sliding mechanism. Both the upper and lower sashes can be moved up and down within the frame.
Counterweight System: Traditional uPVC sliding sash windows often include a counterweight system hidden within the frame. This system uses cords or chains attached to weights to help balance the movement of the sashes, allowing for smoother operation.
Overlap when Closed: When the window is closed, the sashes usually overlap slightly with the frame. This overlapping design helps create a seal that can enhance insulation and reduce drafts.

Run Through Sash Horns
Sash horns are decorative projections or extensions located at the lower corners of the vertical meeting rails in traditional sliding sash windows. They are a characteristic feature found in many styles of Victorian and Georgian windows. Sash horns serve both aesthetic and functional purposes:
Aesthetics: Sash horns are primarily decorative elements that enhance the overall appearance of the window. They give the window a traditional and ornate look, contributing to the architectural style of historical buildings.
Structural Support: While their main purpose is aesthetic, sash horns can also provide additional strength and support to the meeting rails, particularly in larger or heavier sash windows. This helps prevent the sashes from sagging or bowing over time.
Historical Significance: Sash horns are often considered a key feature of period-style windows, and their inclusion in modern reproductions helps maintain the authenticity and historical character of buildings.
While sash horns are more commonly associated with wooden sash windows, our uPVC can also incorporate faux sash horns for decorative purposes. These faux horns mimic the appearance of traditional sash horns.

Counterbalance Systems
Following the market uptake of uPVC sash windows, modern counterbalance systems were introduced to replace cords and weights, including spring balances and constant force coil mechanisms. These counterbalance systems enable the sashes to move smoothly and stay in position. Specific systems appear more appropriate for windows of particular sizes, which has led us to implement the following changes:
Windows with sashes up to 850mm in height will have constant force, quick release, and standard sash stops as they do now.
Windows with sashes between 851mm and 1150mm in height will have constant force, no quick release, and extended sash stops.
Windows with sashes 1151mm and over in height will have spring balances, quick release, and standard sash stops as they do now.
Please note that windows specified with PAS 24 security must have spiral balances and a fee may be applicable.
Extended Sash Stops
As listed above (point 2), on windows with sashes between 851mm and 1150mm we will be using extended sash stops, which will reduce the sash openings slightly to ensure the full rated load of the coil mechanisms isn’t surpassed.
